Project overview Like many organizations, we have legacy applications. one of these is a Ruby/Ruby on Rails monolith. We are taking steps to break down the application, one domain at a time. At the time of writing, my team has been charged with targeting what we call the "Advisors"/"Experts" domain.

What will this involve?

1. Re-factoring the "Advisors"/"Expert" domain within the monolith to cleanly enable the extraction.

a. Create a service layer through which all requests must go through.

b. Refactoring the codebase to route all requests via this new service layer (these requests will proxy to the local database without the use of AR, see step c).

c. Refactoring the codebase and removing any and all Active Record references that are tied to the "Advisors"/"Expert" model.

2. Creating a new adapter that allows us to send requests to a newly created "Expert" Kotlin microservice.

3. Document this process to enable future extractions to take place.

The goal here is not to complete the migration to the new microservice but simply to get part of the legacy application into a state where its domain boundaries are clearly drawn.

A key success metric is that it should be easy to switch the new service layer to use the microservice adapter once this work is complete.
