Staff Experience & Recruitment Director, Day Camp

About the Role

CampHire is recruiting a Staff Experience & Recruitment Director on behalf of a premier family-owned day camp in Northern New Jersey. This is a full-time, year-round position that is best suited for a seasoned camp professional with deep experience in day camp operations, high-volume recruiting, staff management, and team culture-building.

The role calls for someone who understands that staffing is more than recruiting—it’s about building a mission-aligned team, cultivating leadership, and ensuring every staff member has the tools and support to thrive. As a member of the leadership team, you will play key role in shaping the staff experience, building a high-performing, values-driven team, and creating the kind of work environment that draws people back year after year.

This role also requires someone who can build strategic relationships with local organizations, colleges, and community partners to unlock new talent pipelines and position camp as an employer of choice in the region. You’ll help amplify our employer brand and ensure the marketplace sees our camp not just as a summer job—but as a meaningful place to grow, lead, and make a difference.

Schedule & Compensation

Year-round full-time role based in Northern NJ.
Winter schedule (Sept–Jan): Mon–Thurs, 9am–4pm onsite; remote on Fridays.
Summer schedule: Mon–Fri, 6:45am–5:30pm during camp season.
Salary: $75,000–$100,000 plus opportunity for a performance bonus.
Benefits: Retirement plan after first year, meals provided during summer.

What You’ll Do

Recruitment & Sourcing

Lead full-cycle hiring for 300+ seasonal staff, including counselors, specialists, lifeguards, nurses, kitchen staff, and administrators.
Utilize job boards (Indeed, LinkedIn), direct outreach, international staffing agencies, and camp-specific networks to source talent.
Build partnerships with local colleges, schools, and youth organizations to unlock new talent pipelines and strengthen off-season recruitment.
Shape the tone and messaging of our camp’s outreach to attract staff who reflect our values, culture, and commitment to inclusion.

Talent Strategy & Planning

Define and manage the camp’s annual staffing plan, hiring calendar, and recruitment budget.
Develop succession plans, identify returning leaders, and design pathways for staff growth.
Champion our staff culture, ensuring the team reflects the heart of camp: warmth, growth, energy, and belonging.
Collaborate with leadership to align hiring with camp program goals, age group needs, and evolving staff structures.

Recruitment Ops & Administration

Oversee all digital tools and systems (CampMinder, staff forms, background checks, certifications) for hiring and onboarding.
Track and report on key staffing metrics: hiring timelines, conversion rates, return rates, and retention.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and hiring regulations.
Implement systems to streamline operations, maintain accurate staff records, and ensure readiness heading into each camp season.

Staff Training & Engagement

Design and run our staff orientation, including pre-camp onboarding, first-week immersion, and ongoing check-ins.
Lead staff development initiatives, building a culture of feedback, growth, and leadership-building throughout the summer.
Develop and implement a performance management system, incorporating mid-season evaluations, end-of-summer reviews, and coaching touchpoints.
Support the staff experience beyond logistics—creating a meaningful, connected, and joyful summer for the team.

What We’re Looking For

Experience working at a summer camp—ideally in a leadership or staffing capacity.
Proven ability to recruit, train, and retain large seasonal teams.
Deep understanding of the day camp environment, its pace, its people, and its purpose.
Strong organizational skills and comfort managing calendars, systems, and data.
A passion for helping staff grow, thrive, and make an impact.
Ability to commute to the camp office in Northern, NJ.
