Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Mission Critical / Data Centers

Position Overview

An engineering organization is seeking a highly experienced Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide technical leadership across a large-scale data center and mission-critical facilities portfolio. This role will support the design, delivery, and long-term performance of complex electrical infrastructure while contributing to strategic growth, innovation, and mentorship across the discipline.

This position may be aligned with any U.S.-based office location and may also be fully remote for candidates not located near an office.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Innovation

Provide internal technical leadership in electrical engineering across data center programs.
Establish electrical design strategy with clients through upfront planning and system optimization.
Lead optimization of electrical systems, including:
Medium- and low-voltage (MV/LV) distribution
UPS systems
Generators
Grounding
Redundancy strategies
Promote innovation in power systems, energy efficiency, and resiliency.
Develop and maintain electrical standards, specifications, and best practices.
Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and lifecycle performance of electrical systems.

Strategic Impact & Business Development

Serve as an external technical representative during client engagements, industry forums, and strategic pursuits.
Partner with business development and sales teams to support pursuit of high-value data center projects.
Participate in client workshops, proposal development, and technical strategy discussions.
Influence business outcomes through technical differentiation and delivery excellence.

Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing

Mentor and coach engineers and designers within the electrical discipline.
Publish technical papers and contribute to organizational thought leadership.
Present at industry conferences and participate in professional associations.

Execution & Multi-Tasking

Balance strategic initiatives with hands-on project execution across multiple priorities.
Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts across global sites.
Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC, IEEE, NFPA, IEC, and local requirements.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred).
20+ years of experience in electrical engineering, including 15+ years in mission-critical/data center environments.
Proven expertise in:
MV/LV distribution
UPS systems
Generator sizing
Fault coordination
Arc flash analysis
Strong familiarity with NEC, IEEE, NFPA, IEC, and local electrical codes.
Demonstrated record of technical innovation solving client challenges.
Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification is a plus.
Exceptional communication, leadership, and multi-tasking skills.

Preferred Experience

Experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data center clients.
Involvement in sustainability and energy optimization initiatives.
Vendor management and contract negotiation experience.
Hands-on commissioning and retro-commissioning expertise.

Work Environment

Primarily office-based with occasional travel to project sites and client locations.
Travel up to 25% based on project and business needs.
On-call availability for critical incident support.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary range: $225,000 to $280,000, depending on experience, skills, education, and location.
