AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF LIVER DISEASES

The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), located in Alexandria, VA, is the leading organization of scientists and health care professionals committed to preventing and curing liver disease. They are seeking a Director of Clinical Practice and Quality. This position is remote with occasional travel required. While exceptional candidates will be considered from most of the contiguous United States, preference will be given to applicants located in CT, DC, FL, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, OH, VA, and WI. POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President of Publications and Practice Resources, the Director of Clinical Practice and Quality leads the strategy and operational execution of clinical initiatives that support evidence-based practice and improve patient outcomes. This role is fundamentally a clinical translation position: the person who fills it must be familiar with clinical evidence and understand how it applies in real care settings. The Director is responsible for developing and advancing a clinical practice resources strategy and providing the strategic and operational oversight of a portfolio of programs that translate scientific evidence into practical tools for clinicians. This role oversees staff responsible for managing clinical practice guideline workflows and leads the development of practice resources such as quality measures, decision-support tools, consensus and endpoint documents, care pathways, and implementation tools. The Director collaborates closely with clinical leaders, committees, and cross-functional teams to ensure timely, high-quality delivery of clinical resources aligned with organizational priorities.

Key projects include:

Practice guidelines and expert practice opinions that are evidence-based clinically relevant, and designed to support real-world practice
The translation of clinical recommendations into practical tools, education opportunities, and implementation-ready digital resources
The development of consensus and endpoint documents
The development of learning health networks focused on quality improvement

RESPONSIBILITIES

Initiatives and Deliverables

Clinical practice guidelines, endpoints, and consensus development initiatives
Quality measures derived from practice guidelines
Point-of-care clinical decision, quality improvement, or reference tools
Grant-supported publications and reporting

Strategic Leadership

Alongside AASLD’s internal leadership, develop and implement a strategy for practice resources aligned with organizational mission and strategic priorities, including:

Identifying emerging clinical needs and opportunities to expand practice resources and tools;
Establishing priorities, timelines, and success metrics across the practice resource portfolio;
Aligning clinical initiatives with broader publications, education, and practice guideline strategies;
Monitoring trends in clinical practice, drug development, healthcare quality, and digital innovation to inform program development.

Operational Leadership

Oversee project planning, timelines, and workflows across multiple concurrent initiatives.
Coordinate and/or contribute to cross-functional teams, including publications, digital, education, communications, and grants functions.
Manage committee workflows and support engagement with clinical experts and working groups.
Track performance metrics and program outcomes to evaluate effectiveness and impact.
Manage vendor and consultant relationships supporting clinical initiatives.
Ensure consistent, efficient processes across clinical resource development activities.
Develops annual budget estimates and manages activities within budgeted resources.
Manages vendors and contracts within budget parameters.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Team Leadership & Development

Lead and supervise a team of 2-3 staff responsible for practice resource development and implementation.
Establish clear roles, expectations, and performance goals.
Foster a collaborative and accountable team culture focused on high-quality delivery.
Support professional growth and development of team members.
Allocate staff resources to ensure efficient execution of priority initiatives.

Stakeholder Collaboration

Serve as a primary liaison to relevant committees, subject matter experts, and advisory groups.
Partner with internal leadership and cross-functional teams to advance shared clinical priorities.
Lead collaborations with clinician experts and external partners as needed.
Support development of grant proposals and externally funded initiatives related to clinical resources.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Minimum of six years of relevant experience in clinical practice, clinical program development, healthcare quality, or medical education
Demonstrated experience leading complex clinical initiatives or programs
Clinical background is required; candidates must demonstrate substantive experience in a clinical practice environment, whether through clinical training and licensure (RN, NP, PA, or equivalent), scientific or laboratory research experience, or a career that has included direct work in hospital systems, specialty practice, or clinical care coordination
Proven leadership experience managing staff and cross-functional teams
Strong project management and operational planning experience
Experience translating clinical evidence into practical tools and programs
Experience working alongside volunteer leaders within a medical specialty society or comparable clinical governance environment
Knowledge of key programmatic, operational, and financial issues and priorities
Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and internet skills

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Advanced degree in a medical, clinical, or scientific discipline (e.g., RN, PA, NP, or equivalent)
Familiarity with GRADE methodology or other structured evidence appraisal frameworks used in clinical practice guideline development
Ability to use Monday.com and DropBox
Knowledge of and experience in data registries or learning health networks
Experience supporting clinical practice guideline development workflows
Familiarity with quality measure development and performance improvement initiatives
Experience developing clinical decision-support tools or digital practice resources
Experience managing grant-funded programs
Experience working within a professional medical society or nonprofit healthcare organization
Clinical or scientific background in hepatology, gastroenterology, or related specialty areas
