Job Brief

We are seeking an experienced Full Stack Software Developer to design, build, and maintain an in-house web-based drawing review and document management platform for the construction industry.

The platform will replace reliance on third-party software with a modern, highly integrated solution tailored to internal business processes. The system will support drawing management, document control, collaborative review, project workflows, and AI-powered document processing while integrating with existing operational and commercial systems.

The successful candidate will take ownership of the technical architecture and development of the platform, from the initial MVP through to production deployment and ongoing improvement. This is an opportunity for a strong full stack developer to take a leading role in building a scalable, enterprise-grade internal product from the ground up.

Responsibilities

System Architecture & Development

Application Architecture: Design and develop a scalable web application architecture capable of supporting complex construction and engineering workflows.

Authentication & Permissions: Implement secure multi-user authentication, role-based access control, and user permission structures.

API Development: Build robust APIs and integrations connecting the platform with internal and third-party systems.

Database Architecture: Design and optimise database structures capable of managing very large drawing and document libraries.

Performance Engineering: Ensure the platform performs efficiently across projects containing thousands of drawings and large document files.

Drawing Management

Drawing Uploads: Develop reliable single and bulk drawing upload functionality.

Version Control: Implement automatic version control, revision history, superseded drawing management, and revision registers.

Document Organisation: Build folder structures, metadata management, discipline categorisation, and package management functionality.

Drawing Identification: Implement automated sheet numbering and drawing indexing.

Revision Comparison: Develop tools for comparing drawing revisions and identifying changes.

Drawing Review & Collaboration

Markups & Annotations: Develop collaborative drawing review functionality including markups, comments, pin-based annotations, and hyperlinks.

Issue Management: Build issue tracking, task assignment, review statuses, and notification workflows.

Approval Workflows: Implement digital approvals, review processes, and comprehensive audit trails.

Drawing Comparison: Develop overlay comparison and automated revision comparison functionality.

Document Control

Controlled Documents: Build workflows for managing RFIs, Technical Queries, Site Instructions, Engineering Instructions, NCRs, and design changes.

Approval & Distribution: Implement controlled approval workflows, distribution lists, transmittals, and document registers.

Document History: Ensure all document activity, revisions, approvals, and changes are captured through reliable audit trails.

AI & Intelligent Automation

OCR & Data Extraction: Implement OCR functionality to extract information from drawings and documents.

Drawing Recognition: Develop automatic title block recognition, drawing indexing, and revision detection.

Intelligent Search: Implement AI-assisted drawing search and natural language querying capabilities.

Automated Classification: Develop automatic tagging, duplicate detection, and similar drawing recommendations.

AI Integration: Integrate AI and computer vision technologies into document processing workflows where appropriate.

Systems Integration

Internal Systems: Integrate the platform with existing Operations, commercial, project management, and document management systems.

Microsoft 365: Develop integrations with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, email workflows, and authentication providers.

Cloud Storage: Integrate with cloud storage platforms and object storage services.

API & Workflow Integration: Build reliable data flows between the platform and existing business systems.

Performance & Reliability

Large File Handling: Optimise the platform for large PDF files, complex drawings, and high-volume document libraries.

Rendering: Implement fast PDF page rendering and progressive loading.

Background Processing: Develop efficient background processing and job queues for resource-intensive tasks.

Caching: Implement appropriate caching strategies to improve system responsiveness.

Mobile & Offline: Support responsive, mobile-friendly workflows and offline functionality where required.

Availability: Build systems designed for high availability, reliability, and operational continuity.

Requirements

Proven experience as a Full Stack Software Developer building and deploying production web applications.

Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and Next.js.

Strong backend development experience using Node.js and TypeScript.

Experience designing and developing REST APIs, with GraphQL experience highly regarded.

Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, database optimisation, indexing, query performance, and data migrations.

Experience handling large files, particularly PDFs and document-based workflows.

Practical experience with PDF rendering, manipulation, image processing, OCR, or document indexing.

Strong understanding of cloud-based application development and deployment.

Experience with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub, automated deployments, monitoring, and logging.

Strong understanding of application security, including RBAC, OAuth, secure API design, encryption, and audit logging.

Experience working independently and taking ownership of technical architecture and development decisions.

Excellent written and verbal English communication skills aligned with Australian professional standards.

Authentication & Security – Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD, OAuth, RBAC

Document Processing – PDF.js or equivalent, OCR, image processing

AI & Automation – OpenAI, OCR technologies, computer vision models

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

Equivalent professional software development experience will also be considered.
