The Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), located in Bethesda, MD, is the global leader in standards development, accreditation, and implementation of quality systems in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Finance & Information Officer, the Senior Controller manages the financial activities of the finance department of the Association and related entities in accordance with policies, goals, and objectives established by the Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors, and GAAP. This position coordinates activities with an outsourced financial partner and leads the internal and external accounting teams. The Senior Controller assists senior management and directors in the implementation of AABB’s policies and goals, including operations, programs, financial performance, and member services.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Working with AABB’s outsourced financial partner, ensure timely, accurate, and informative financial reporting for the preparation of accurate financial statements and reports.
Maintain responsibility for all aspects of the general ledger, reviewing all monthly journal entries and ensuring all necessary documentation is in order to support journal entries and general ledger balances.
Provide leadership, guidance, and training to department staff performing a variety of accounting functions to ensure that staff maintain a high level of confidence in their work and that leadership is achieved and maintained.
Assist AABB staff with budget activity, proper expenditure coding, document preparation, and other accounting-related activities.
Assist in the development of the annual budget and other financial information requested by AABB leadership.
Supervise daily activities in accounting including, but not limited to, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and grant accounting.
Prepare schedules for annual tax returns.
Prepare and file all local, state, and federal tax returns in a timely manner.
Prepare the 990.
Work closely with Human Resources on payroll administration; audit payroll for accuracy and compliance with relevant federal, state, and local requirements; ensure all related payroll, federal, state, and local taxes and reports are submitted in a timely manner.
Act as liaison with outsourced financial partner and other internal departments to ensure timely, accurate, and informative financial reporting.
Implement and maintain new accounting systems to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and security of financial processes.
Review the annual financial audit process and provide information to the outside audit firm as needed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
Minimum of ten years of experience running the day-to-day accounting and finance operations of an organization
Extensive experience with GAAP and nonprofit accounting
Advanced knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
Thorough working knowledge of financial activities of not-for-profit business organizations, including accounting systems, budgeting, and financial reporting
Proven strong accounting and financial analysis capabilities
Demonstrated fiscal responsibility through effective budgetary management and understanding of department budget’s impact on the overall financial picture of the organization
CPA or MBA preferred
